BDZ develops concepts for decentralized water management in close cooperation with member companies and institutions. The realization of these concepts will be accomplished by providing suitable conditions for the implementation of sustainable wastewater treatment technologies. The main tasks to be solved are the development of technologies adapted to the location, the development of operating models and the establishment of country or site-specific utilisation and recycling concepts.

An important element of the activities of BDZ is the procurement of project specific funds for the realization of international development work. There have been cooperations with European partners from Denmark, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Slovenia as well as Jordan, Israel, and Palestine in the Arab region.
